Short answer: for a small business that wants real engagement data, StaffHero is the simplest buy: a flat $99 a month covers up to 50 employees, with anonymous pulse surveys and eNPS. If you have 10 or fewer people, Connecteam, Geekbot, and Teamflect all have free plans. For recognition on a small budget, Bonusly, Matter, and HeyTaco start between $1 and $3 per user per month.
What most “best engagement software” lists leave out is that many well-known platforms set annual minimums of $3,000 to $15,000. That’s fine for a 500-person company. For a 30-person business it can mean paying for seats you’ll never fill. Every tool below publishes its pricing, and we’ve listed the minimums to watch for at the end.
Pricing checked October 2026 on each vendor’s own site. Prices are in USD unless noted.

How we picked
We started with the 76 tools in our directory and kept the ones that publish a price a small business can see without booking a demo. We then checked each vendor’s pricing page in October 2026 for per-user costs, flat-rate options, free plans, trials, and stated minimums. Review-site scores weren’t used, and no number on this page comes from anywhere other than the vendor’s own site. Our methodology page has the details.
The tools
1. StaffHero
StaffHero is a pulse survey tool built for companies that want honest, anonymous feedback without hiring an HR analyst to read it. Surveys go out on a schedule, results feed an eNPS score and a heatmap, and an AI Leadership Brief summarizes what changed. There’s also an action tracker, so a survey result can turn into an owner and a due date.
Best for: Small and growing companies (roughly 10 to 200 people) that want engagement measurement at a predictable price.
Key features:
- Anonymous pulse surveys and eNPS
- Heatmap with segmentation by team and other attributes
- AI Leadership Brief summarizing results
- Action tracker for follow-up
Pricing: Flat monthly tiers instead of per-seat pricing. Starter is $99/month for up to 50 employees, Growth is $199/month for up to 100, and Scale is $299/month for up to 200. Paying annually gets you 2 months free. You can set up a workspace and explore demo mode before paying, and the vendor states a 60-day money-back guarantee.
Pros:
- Flat pricing means adding employee number 31 doesn’t change your bill
- Demo mode lets you see the reporting before committing
- Focused product, so there’s little to configure
Cons:
- Not a recognition or performance review tool, so you may still want something like Bonusly alongside it
- Slack integration starts on the $199 Growth plan, not Starter
Slack / Teams: Slack integration is included from Growth up. Teams isn’t listed.
2. Connecteam
A lot of small businesses don’t have desks: restaurants, cleaning companies, clinics, contractors. Connecteam is designed for them. It’s a single mobile app split into hubs. Communications covers chat, company updates, a directory, surveys, events, a knowledge base, and a help desk. HR & Skills handles recognition, rewards, and celebrations, while Operations covers time clock and scheduling.
Best for: Shift-based or field teams who mostly use their phones.
Key features:
- Team chat and company updates
- Surveys and a knowledge base
- Recognition, rewards, and automated celebrations
- Scheduling and time tracking in the same app
Pricing: Free for up to 10 users, with Connecteam stating that all hubs and features are included (an asterisk points to its feature list). Above that, each hub starts at $29/month for the first 30 users billed yearly, or $35 billed monthly. A 14-day trial is available.
Pros:
- The free plan is generous for very small teams
- One app replaces several tools for deskless staff
Cons:
- Costs climb if you need more than one hub
- Less suited to office teams who live in Slack or Teams
Slack / Teams: Not confirmed on the pages we checked.
3. Bonusly
Bonusly is peer recognition with real rewards attached. Employees give each other small amounts of points, tied to company values, and redeem them in a rewards catalog. It also handles birthday and anniversary celebrations and has check-ins and 1:1s.
Best for: Teams that want recognition to be a daily habit, with an actual budget behind it.
Key features:
- Peer-to-peer recognition tied to values
- Rewards catalog
- Celebrations for birthdays and work anniversaries
- Check-ins and 1:1s
Pricing: No free plan is listed on Bonusly’s pricing page as of November 2, 2026. The Team plan is $3 per user per month without the Bizy AI assistant or $5 with it ($30 or $50 per user per year on annual billing). Bonusly’s pricing page shows monthly prices, but its FAQ says all plans are billed annually, so confirm billing terms before signing. There’s a 30-day trial. Note that rewards themselves are a separate budget you set.
Pros:
- Slack, Teams, and mobile apps included on the Team plan
- Low per-user price for small teams
Cons:
- The reward budget is an extra cost on top of the subscription
- Survey and analytics depth is limited compared with a dedicated survey tool
Slack / Teams: Both.

4. Matter
Matter is the cheapest paid option on this list. It runs inside Slack or Teams and covers kudos, a recurring Feedback Friday prompt, birthdays and anniversaries, and (with an add-on) pulse surveys and eNPS.
Best for: Small teams on chat who want recognition and light feedback for very little money.
Key features:
- Kudos inside Slack or Teams
- Feedback Friday prompts
- Birthday and anniversary messages
- Pulse surveys and eNPS (surveys add-on)
Pricing: A free-forever plan covers kudos, the template library, and Feedback Friday. Basic is $1 and Pro is $3 per user per month, billed annually. The surveys add-on costs $2 per user per month extra. There’s a 14-day trial.
Pros:
- Very low cost
- Nothing new for employees to log into
Cons:
- Surveys cost extra
- Only useful if your team actually works in Slack or Teams
Slack / Teams: Both.

5. Teamflect
If your business runs on Microsoft 365, Teamflect is worth a look. It lives inside Microsoft Teams and Outlook and covers feedback, recognition, goals, 1:1s, and performance reviews, so employees don’t need another app.
Best for: Small businesses on Microsoft Teams that want performance and engagement tools in one place.
Key features:
- Recognition and feedback inside Teams
- 1:1 meeting templates
- Goals and performance reviews
- Outlook integration
Pricing: The Starter plan is USD 0 for up to 10 users. Essential is $7 per user per month and Professional is $11 on annual billing ($9 and $14 billed monthly). There’s a 30-day trial.
Pros:
- Free for teams of 10 or fewer
- Native to Teams, so adoption is easier in Microsoft shops
Cons:
- No Slack support
- At $7 to $9 per user, it costs more than survey-only or recognition-only tools
Slack / Teams: Teams only.
6. Geekbot
Geekbot started as a standup bot and is still best at that: it asks each person a short set of questions in Slack or Teams and posts the answers to a channel. It also runs polls and surveys, which makes it a cheap way to collect regular check-ins from a remote team.
Best for: Remote and hybrid teams that want async standups plus quick pulse questions.
Key features:
- Async standups and retrospectives
- Polls and surveys
- Reports in Slack or Teams
Pricing: Free for teams of up to 10 users. Standups cost $2.50 per participant per month billed annually ($3 monthly). Polls & Surveys cost $0.75 per respondent per month annually ($1 monthly). There’s a 30-day trial.
Pros:
- Free for small teams
- Pay only for the module you use
Cons:
- Not a full engagement platform: no recognition or benchmarks
- Reporting is lighter than a dedicated survey tool
Slack / Teams: Both.
7. ThriveSparrow
ThriveSparrow pairs engagement surveys (Engage) with a recognition module (Kudos), sold separately or bundled. For a small business that wants both, the bundle price is low.
Best for: Companies that want surveys and recognition from one vendor at a per-employee price.
Key features:
- Engagement and pulse surveys
- Peer recognition (Kudos)
- Goals and performance modules also offered
Pricing: Engage is $3 per employee per month, Kudos is $2, and the two together are $4, billed annually. A free trial is available.
Pros:
- Surveys and recognition for $4 per employee
- Published pricing with no demo required
Cons:
- Smaller vendor, so fewer third-party integrations to compare
- We couldn’t confirm chat integrations on its site
Slack / Teams: Not confirmed on the pages we checked.

8. Small Improvements
Small Improvements sits closer to performance management than pure engagement. Its strength is the feedback loop between managers and employees: 360 feedback, anytime feedback, objectives, 1:1s, and pulse surveys.
Best for: Small companies that want managers to have better conversations, with pulse surveys as part of the package.
Key features:
- 360 and anytime feedback
- Objectives
- 1:1 meetings and pulse surveys (Grow plan)
- Slack integration (Grow plan)
Pricing: Launch is $3 per user per month billed annually, and Grow is $6. Minimum pricing applies, so very small teams should check the floor before signing. There’s a 30-day trial.
Pros:
- Strong manager-employee feedback tools
- Clear tier pricing
Cons:
- Pulse surveys and Slack need the $6 Grow plan
- A minimum charge applies
Slack / Teams: Slack on Grow. Teams not confirmed.

9. HeyTaco
HeyTaco turns recognition into a light game. People give tacos in Slack or Teams, there are leaderboards and quests, and tacos can be traded in a Taco Shop for rewards your company sets.
Best for: Informal, chat-first teams that want recognition to feel fun.
Key features:
- Taco-based peer recognition
- Leaderboards and quests
- Taco Shop for rewards
- Milestones, gift cards, and analytics (Deluxe)
Pricing: Classic is $3 per user per month and Deluxe is $5. There’s a 30-day trial with no card required. Pricing is custom above 200 users.
Pros:
- Easy to set up and easy for staff to understand
- Works in both Slack and Teams
Cons:
- The playful style won’t suit every culture
- No engagement surveys
Slack / Teams: Both.

10. BambooHR
BambooHR isn’t an engagement tool first. It’s an HRIS (employee records, onboarding, time off). It’s on this list because many small businesses would rather add engagement features to the HR system they already need than buy a separate product. The Pro plan adds performance management, 360s, and 1:1s.
Best for: Small businesses that need an HR system and want performance features in the same place.
Key features:
- Employee records, onboarding, and time off
- Performance management, 360 feedback, and 1:1s (Pro)
- Integrations marketplace (Slack is listed)
Pricing: Above 25 employees, Core is $10.25, Pro $17.50, and Elite $25 per employee per month. For 25 or fewer employees, BambooHR charges a flat $250, $425, or $650 per month by plan.
Pros:
- One system for HR records and performance
- Flat pricing for very small teams
Cons:
- Expensive if you only want engagement features
- Performance features need the Pro plan
Slack / Teams: Slack is listed on BambooHR’s integrations page. Teams not confirmed.
Watch the minimums
Some popular platforms publish per-seat prices that look small business friendly until you read the fine print. These are the minimums we found on vendor sites in October 2026:
| Platform | Stated minimum |
|---|---|
| Quantum Workplace | $15,000 minimum contract |
| Engagedly | $7,500 per year minimum |
| Lattice | $4,000 annual minimum |
| Motivosity | $3,000 minimum spend |
| Awardco | Packages from $3,000 |
To put that in context: Lattice’s Engagement product is listed at $4 per seat per month. For a 20-person company that works out to $960 a year, but the $4,000 minimum means you’d pay more than four times that. None of these are bad products. They’re just priced for companies with a few hundred employees. If you’re at that size, see our main guide to the best employee engagement software.
How to choose engagement software for a small business
Start from headcount, not features. Under 10 people, use a free plan (Connecteam, Geekbot, Teamflect, Matter). Between 10 and 200, compare flat pricing like StaffHero’s against per-user pricing at your real headcount.
Do the per-employee math both ways. A $3 per user tool costs $1,800 a year for 50 people. StaffHero’s Starter plan costs $990 a year for up to 50 on annual billing. At 15 people, the per-user tool is cheaper. Run your own numbers.
Decide what you’re measuring. If you want to know how people feel and track it over time, you need surveys with eNPS (StaffHero, ThriveSparrow, Matter with the add-on). If you want people to feel noticed, you need recognition (Bonusly, HeyTaco, Matter). Those are different problems.
Match where your team works. Office teams on Slack or Teams will adopt a chat-based tool faster. Frontline staff need a mobile app, which points to Connecteam. Our list of best employee engagement apps covers more mobile-first options.
Keep anonymity real. Small teams make anonymous results easy to decode. Look for minimum group sizes in reporting and don’t segment a five-person team.
Avoid annual lock-in until you’ve tested. Use the trial or demo mode first. Most tools here offer one.
FAQ
What is the best employee engagement software for a small business?
It depends on what you need. StaffHero is a strong pick for anonymous pulse surveys at a flat $99 a month for up to 50 employees. Bonusly and Matter are good low-cost recognition tools, and Connecteam fits frontline teams.
How much does employee engagement software cost for a small business?
Published prices on this list range from free (for teams of up to 10 users) to about $1 to $9 per user per month. Flat-rate options like StaffHero start at $99 a month for up to 50 employees. Some enterprise platforms set annual minimums of $3,000 to $15,000.
Is there free employee engagement software for small teams?
Yes. Connecteam, Geekbot, and Teamflect are free for up to 10 users, and Matter has a free-forever plan. See our full list of free employee engagement apps.
Do small businesses need engagement surveys?
Not always, but small teams lose more when one person leaves. A short anonymous pulse survey every few weeks is a cheap way to catch problems early. With very small teams, keep questions general so answers stay anonymous.
Can I use Lattice or Culture Amp as a small business?
You can, but check the minimums first. Lattice states a $4,000 annual minimum, which is more than a small team would pay at its per-seat price. Culture Amp doesn’t publish pricing, so ask for a quote at your headcount.
